PETERHOUSE SCHOOL Established over 30 years ago, Peterhouse School is a respected, specialist, independent special school that provides both day and/or residential services for 55 young people aged from 5 to 19 years old who have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The school is situated on the northern outskirts of Southport, on a campus shared with 2 Local Education Authority (LEA) schools. The Residential accommodation is situated 3 miles away, in 3 houses in pleasant locations. There are five classes and a Further Education Department in the school, each staffed by a Teacher and a minimum of three Teaching Assistants to a maximum of eight pupils. The staffing ratio for residential individuals is similarly 2:1 with occasional, exceptional 1:1 staffing arrangements both within school and residentially. In addition to autism specialist class teachers, other specialists employed by the school include: a Speech and Language Therapist, Family Liaison Officer, and subject specific teachers for PE, Music, Art, Science and ICT, all with expertise in ASD. Additional input is available from the Occupational Therapist, Consultant Psychiatrist, Physiotherapist and School Health Advisor according to individual need. |

Regular 'Open Mornings' are held to give parents and professionals the opportunity to look around the school and residential houses and to meet the Principal, Deputy, Head of Residential Services, Family Liaison Officer and Speech & Language Therapist. Formal application for a placement at Peterhouse School is generally made through the Local Education Authority of the area in which the child lives. Arrangements may then be made to visit the child in their current provision and an observational assessment is completed by Senior Staff. If it is considered that the child’s needs could effectively be met at Peterhouse School, commissioners are requesting a placement and an appropriate placement is available, an offer is made in writing to the LEA. The curricular approach seeks to address the prime needs of individuals with ASD through an understanding of the communication, social and thinking skill differences which they experience. The National Curriculum and other frameworks are the vehicles through which this is achieved. For young people who attend the school residentially, the partnership that exists between staff, parents and professionals informs the delivery of a consistent, high quality, waking day curriculum. We are inspected by a range of agencies, including OFSTED, the National Care Standards Commission and consortia of LEA’s. We are proud of the consistently positive results of inspection, which regularly highlight the manner in which the young people, parents and other professionals work together to achieve the same goals, and staff are committed to their roles. They consistently highlight the high quality of education and care provided by the school and note that staff are well informed, motivated and deliver an exceptional service.
