Information, Training and Advice Services

1. OSSME – Outreach Support Service for Mainstream Education

Services:

  • TRAINING – Multi disciplined Practitioners and Parents/Carers
  • EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS – Schools, Nurseries, Colleges, Universities
  • PROJECTS – Designed and developed in response to stated need

What type of TRAINING can the OSSME team deliver?

All of our training is autism spectrum disorder (ASD) specific and is delivered at levels to match the profile of our many and varied audiences.

We pride ourselves in bridging theory with practice and evaluations from delegates describe our presentations and workshops as interactive, engaging and thought provoking, with more than 93% of respondents rating OSSME presenters as ‘Excellent’ or ‘Very Good’.

Our audiences and participants include:

  • Hundreds of practitioners from education, health, social services, Police and various voluntary organisations and private companies
  • Dozens of parents join us in workshops and licensed training programmes e.g. EarlyBird

We devise, deliver and co-ordinate bespoke training packages that last for between half an hour and up to three days and a module accredited to Master’s Degree level can be assessed as part of University professional development programmes.

OSSME trainers deliver courses individually, in pairs or the whole team may be involved in some events. We can present in your school, workplace or hired venue, or we have a training suite on site, here in Crosby, that accommodates audiences of up to 50 people.

Whole school training is automatically included in our 5 or 7 Step service level agreements with educational settings.

What work does OSSME do in EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS?

OSSME develops and oversees unique service delivery systems that act as frameworks for educational staff and families to build transparent pathways of support for young people with ASD. We aim to impart information, hints and tips to staff to empower them in their work with pupils and students with ASD e.g. TEACCH, PECS and SOCIAL STORIES.

We offer an OSSME 5 Step Individual Intervention or an OSSME 7 Step Transition Agreement as an entry level for our services.

Our work is characterised by highlighting good practice already in evidence in educational settings; recommending, demonstrating and modelling practice strategies; engineering individualised resources; compiling individualised OSSME Information Packs and offering various models of training to staff.

What type of PROJECTS is OSSME involved in?

Projects are formulated by the OSSME team in response to stated need by young people with ASD, their families/carers and practitioners who support them.

The team is increasingly adept at sourcing funding from a variety of sponsors including the Department for Education and Skills, European Development Fund, Community Fund, Health Action Zone and The Big Lottery. We write, manage and deliver innovative plans involving a variety of participants and recipients within the terms of complex funding arrangements.

ACHIEVEMENTS

Our innovative work has been recognised locally, nationally and internationally. We have had papers about our services accepted by the World Autism Inaugural Congress in Australia and South Africa, the Autisme Europe Congress in Scotland and Portugal and the International Special Educational Needs Congress in England. We have also visited the home of TEACCH in America as part of a scholarship granted by the English Speaking Union.
