This month, Autism Initiatives Ireland, announced another success with one of their Service Users being handed keys to a new hom

Dan, a 25 year old man with high functioning autism, and his dog Nero have been living successfully in his own apartment for five years with support from Autism Initiatives and family. However, over the years as Dan’s needs changed he found the location of his apartment to be a problem with anxiety levels increasing due to the busy and loud environment.

Working in partnership with autism service provider, Autism Initiatives, Dan and his family set the goal of looking for a more suitable place to live. Dan found the ideal house for him and Nero and in early 2016 the Council approved his application. Since then, Dan and support workers within Autism Initiatives’ Outreach Services have worked on a smooth transition into the new home.

Speaking about Dan’s achievement, National Director at Autism Initiatives, Amanda McDonald, commented:

“My team are incredibly happy for Dan and Nero and wish them the very best in their new home. Working with our Service Users to lead independent lives is paramount to the work we do at Autism Initiatives and to see Dan relaxed and in a happier place makes it all worthwhile. We have recently introduced Dan to Supported Living Programme and our Community Support Services teams will continue to work with him while he adapts to this new chapter in his life.”
