Autism Initiatives in Northern Ireland

Autism Initiatives is the largest voluntary sector provider of direct support services to children and adults with autism in Northern Ireland.

We were established in Northern Ireland in 2002 and have expanded rapidly. We now provide services to over 200 families and employ almost 250 staff. Our reputation as a flexible provider of high quality services has been instrumental in supporting this growth.

Developing partnerships

We work in close partnership with families and service users as well as other voluntary organisations and colleagues in the statutory sector. The Northern Ireland government is developing a strategy for autism services and Autism Initiatives are involved in all aspects of this. A key government target is to move people away from long stay hospitals and we have played a key role in providing supported living for some of these people.

The services we currently provide in Northern Ireland include:

One Stop Shop

Our One Stop Shop for adults with Asperger Syndrome and High Functioning Autism in Londonderry was established with the support of the BIG Lottery Fund. This continues to offer a range of advice and social activities to enable adults to live as independently and successfully as possible.

Providing purposeful and enjoyable activities for adults with autism throughout the week. The aim of these services is to maximise the use of community facilities, and support service users to develop occupationally fulfilling lifestyles.

Learning & Development

Autism Initiatives provides a range of training courses and learning opportunities for its staff based on the mandatory requirements of regulatory bodies, the values of the organisation and the needs of the staff. The purpose of providing the learning and development activities is to help the organisation achieve its mission and vision.

Our expectation is that people with Autism can learn and develop and we support this process every single day. We also achieve this by providing our staff with the best training so they can carry out their work to the highest standard possible.
